River Trace Golf Club is a Private 18 hole golf course located in Gadsden, Alabama. first opened for play in 1932. The course was redesigned in 1974 by Red Lawrence.
River Trace is flat course that is easy and enjoyable to walk. The fairways are all tree lined, so shot accuracy is important from off the tees. There are only a few sand bunkers on the course. The signature hole is #13, a 169-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot over water to the green.
Par for the course is 71. From the back tees the course plays to 6,073 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,422 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 11, a par-5 that plays to 517 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 16, a par-3 that plays to 108 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 3, a 445 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 16, a 108 yard par-3.
The course closed for play, December 31, 2012. The course, formerly the Goodyear Golf Club, had been open since the 1932. The last day was sad for most members. The last day did have one happy moment - Mike Barkley made a hole-in-one on the par-three 13th hole.
Barkley, who worked many years in the pro shop at the course, said it was the fourth hole-in-one in his career. Obviously it was the last one made at River Trace.
The property is being redeveloped and will reportedly include a Publix and Target shopping strip.
